Sonar Marker & Mine Recovery

Description

The Sonar Marker and Mine Recovery Outfit (SMMRO) is used during mine countermeasures/ explosive ordnance disposal (MCM/EOD) operations and exercises.

It is deployed from inflatable class MM craft by clearance diving units (CDUs). The SMMRO was introduced into service in 1985.

The mod 1 version, which features numerous technical improvements, entered service progressively from 1999.

The SMMRO, commonly referred to as the ‘icos line’ comprises of a recovery line, a non-magnetic sonar reflector, an anchor, a nonmagnetic anchor and a surface marker float.

The image shows the components of the SMMRO in a deployed state.

NOTE: The components of the SMMRO mod 1 are compatible and interchangeable with the previous components.

Both types may be used as required. The SMMRO is the only datum marking system authorised for use for live MCM/EOD operations.

The SMMRO is used in the following circumstances: to mark a sonar contact for investigation by a diver; to improve a seabed datum during MCM/EOD operations and exercises; to mark a located ground mine; to recover inert mines and other objects from the seabed; to recover an RCMD vehicle in the event of malfunction; as a diver’s shot, shot rope and distance line during MCM/EOD diving operations and exercises.
